On the last Wednesday of every month, admission to the Rubens House is free of charge.

In 1620, the Antwerp town secretary wrote of Rubens’ house (and the house of the printer, Moretus):‘Their homes will elicit the amazement of foreigners, the admiration of travellers’. At the time, Rubens had been living in his beautiful house in the ‘Wapper’ street for five years. He had designed it himself: bold, lavish and stately  – a palazzo on the Schelde, with a residence in the Old Flemish style, and a studio in exuberant Southern baroque, both connected elegantly by an impressive porchway.

On the last Wednesday of the month, you can come and pay a visit free of charge to this artist’s home. Wander through the rich kunstkamer (art room), where Rubens indulged his passion for collecting, the studio where he changed the direction of art, and the garden in which he strolled with important visitors. But there is also the parlour, the kitchen, bedroom and linen room. They are furnished with everything a family would need. After all, an artist’s house is also a home.
