Although Adriaenssen painted a whole range of still lifes, he really made his name as a painter of fish. He also produced a number of paintings in which he combined fish with other motifs. This composition is a fine example.

The fruit, the fish (both whole and sliced), the crab, the poultry and the vegetables all seem to have been brought fresh from the market to the kitchen, where they have been casually placed on the table. The canvas is signed on the right on the edge of the table and dated 1640.

Long-term loan, private collection
