Caravaggio’s compositions with larger than life figures were very audacious. He added great dramatic effect to his paintings with spectacular lighting, creating powerful contrasts between the areas of dark and light.
A Flemish "Caravaggist"
In the early years of his career, Seghers was so influenced by the Italian master that he was often called a Flemish "Caravaggist". The denial of Peter is a good example of Segher's early work. Peter is recognised as one of Jesus' companions in candlelight. But Peter denies this and thus disavows his teacher. Seghers was greatly influenced by Rubens's style.
