Rubens House tip: Michaelina

Leading Lady of the Baroque

Two of Antwerp’s museums, the Rubens House and the MAS, have uniquely joined forces to present the first survey anywhere in the world of the work of Michaelina Wautier (1604–1689). The exhibition will highlight the exceptional talent of this painter, who grew up in a period when women artists were extremely rare. Her work is so wide-ranging and individual that it challenges the art-historical imagination.

The glass ceiling is nothing new: it was virtually impossible for a woman to make it big as an artist in the 17th century. Although Michaelina’s extraordinary talent was in no way inferior to her male contemporaries, her oeuvre was largely forgotten. Thirty of her works have been identified to date, demonstrating her provocative themes and superior pictorial technique.
